BUSINESS GOALS,
ETHICS, MEANING AND DIVERSITY ARE PART OF A SPIRITUALLY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE
New book
integrates personal behavior, spiritual diversity, business ethics,
corporate social responsibility, and leadership strategies as essential to
workplace spirituality
Peabody, MA—The
new book
Workplace Spirituality: A Complete Guide for Business Leaders
by Nancy R. Smith insists that workplace spirituality must include more than
helping people to feel creative and useful. Meaning, mutual respect, ethics,
and social responsibility are equally important. In the book Smith says:
“Providing a meditation room and opportunities for employees to express
their spirituality is not enough. Focusing only on encouraging workers’
personal spiritual needs does not relieve a company of its responsibility to
conduct its business in a way that protects the environment.
“Being strictly ethical in accounting practices is not enough. Ethical
accounting does not free a company from the responsibility of paying a
living wage, nor excuse it for discrimination in hiring and promoting.
“Providing access to corporate chaplains is not enough. Making chaplains
available to employees in the U.S. does not make up for violating the human
rights of immigrants or of overseas workers in the supply chain.”
Shel Horowitz, author of
Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First
and founder of the Business Ethics Pledge, praises Smith’s book as a
“thoroughly researched exploration of workplace spirituality [that] draws on
sources as diverse as ancient folktales from around the world, books by
leading economic experts, and popular news media. It's particularly
gratifying that she devotes several chapters to ethics and social responsibility—and that the book not
only affirms Smith's own Christian faith but is careful to validate other
religious traditions as well.”
Smith’s experience includes 20 years as a technical writer and manager,
along with extensive experience in ministry, teaching, and spiritual
coaching and direction. For the past several years she has researched issues
related to spirituality in the workplace and maintained the website
www.WorkplaceSpirituality.info.
